U.S. political and economics priorities in East Asia

Camille Dawson is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with over 22 years of experience designing and implementing diplomatic and public engagement and communication strategies for the U.S. Department of State. She assumed the role of Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs in September 2021 with responsibility for public affairs, public diplomacy, and regional and security policy. Previously, she served as the Public Diplomacy Fellow and Faculty Advisor at the George Washington University. From 2019 to 2021, she was Director of the Office of Public Diplomacy for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. In prior assignments she served as Counselor for Public Affairs at U.S. Embassy in Singapore (2016-2019) where she also held the role of Acting Deputy Chief of Mission for one year; Africa Regional Media Hub Director in Johannesburg, South Africa (2013-2016); Outreach Unit Chief in Shanghai, China (2009-2013); Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer in Beijing, China (2005-2009); Deputy Spokesperson in Beijing, China (2003-2005); and Consular and Political Officer in Manila, Philippines (2000-2002).

DAS Dawson received her bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University. She speaks Mandarin Chinese and has studied Japanese, Tagalog, French, and Spanish.
