As Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Hemisphere, Mr. Ian Saunders is responsible for developing programs, policies and strategies designed to strengthen the United States’ commercial position in the Western Hemisphere. Before his current appointment, Mr. Saunders served as Assistant Commissioner for International Affairs at US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

He also served in other senior positions at CBP, including Deputy Assistant Commissioner for International Affairs, and Acting Deputy Executive Assistant Commissioner for Operations Support. Prior to ITA and CBP, he served for eight years at the Federal Highway Administration, where he led that agency’s information sharing and global technology exchange activities.

Mr. Saunders holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s from Georgetown University. He is also a graduate of the Senior Executive Fellows program at Harvard University and the Federal Executive Institute.
